Any active wager. "I have action on the Dolphins" simply means a bet is placed on that game.
Against the Spread (ATS) Bet Types

Arbitrage (Arb) Bankroll & Strategy

B

Backdoor Cover Market Action
When a team covers the spread on a meaningless late score (e.g., a garbage-time touchdown that flips a -7 game to a -3 cover).
Bad Beat Market Action
A bet that loses in unexpected, painful fashion; a last-second TD, a missed extra point on a 6-point cover, a buzzer-beater that wrecks the over.
Bankroll Bankroll & Strategy
The total amount of money set aside for sports betting. Responsible bettors track bankroll separately from living expenses and bet a fixed percentage per wager.
Beard Market Action
A person who places bets on behalf of someone else (often a sharp who has been limited at a sportsbook). Hard Rock Bet's KYC rules prohibit beard betting.
Bet Builder Bet Types aka SGP
Hard Rock Bet's name for a same-game parlay tool; combining multiple legs from one game into a single wager with adjusted (correlated) odds. Read more →
Bonus Bet Sportsbook Ops aka Free Bet
A free wager credited to your account as part of a promotion. Unlike cash, the stake of a bonus bet is not returned; only the net profit on a win. Read more →
Book Sportsbook Ops

Buy Points Bet Types
Paying extra juice to move a spread or total in your favor; e.g., moving Dolphins -3 to -2.5 at -130 instead of -110.

Cash Out Market Action
Settling a live bet before the game ends for a partial payout based on current win probability. Hard Rock Bet offers cash-out on most singles and many parlays.
Chalk Market Action
The heavy favorite. "Betting chalk" means siding with the favorites; "chalk parlay" is a parlay of all favorites.
Closing Line Odds & Math
The final odds offered before tip-off / kickoff. Considered the sharpest, most efficient price.
Closing Line Value (CLV) Bankroll & Strategy
The difference between the line you bet and the closing line. Consistently beating the closing line is the standard signal of long-term betting skill.
Cooling-Off Period Responsible Gambling
A required delay (usually 24 hours) before a raised responsible-gambling limit takes effect. Lowering a limit on Hard Rock Bet is instant; raising one is delayed by design. Read more →
Correlated Parlay Bet Types

Cover Market Action
Beating the point spread. A -7 favorite needs to win by 8+ to cover; a +7 underdog needs to lose by 6 or fewer (or win outright). Read more →

Dime Bankroll & Strategy
Sports-betting slang for $1,000. A "dime bet" is a $1,000 wager.
Dog Market Action aka Underdog
Underdog. "Taking the dog" = betting the team less expected to win.
Dollar Bankroll & Strategy
Sports-betting slang for $100. A "dollar parlay" is a $100 wager.
Double Chance Bet Types
A soccer market that lets you bet on two of three possible outcomes (Win/Draw, Draw/Loss, or Win/Loss). Lower payout but higher hit rate than a 3-way moneyline.

E

Each-Way Bet Types
Common in golf and horse racing; half your stake is on the outright win, half on a top finish. Hard Rock Bet offers each-way on PGA Tour markets.
Even Money Odds & Math aka Pick'em
Odds of +100 (decimal 2.00); a $100 bet wins $100 in profit. The starting point against which all other odds are measured.
Exposure Sportsbook Ops
A sportsbook's potential loss on a market. Books move lines to balance exposure on both sides.

F

Favorite Market Action
The team or player expected to win. Listed with a minus sign on the moneyline (e.g., Heat -180).
FCCG Responsible Gambling
Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling; the state nonprofit that runs the problem-gambling helpline 1-888-ADMIT-IT (1-888-236-4848).
Field Bet Types
In golf, NASCAR, tennis and other multi-competitor sports, the "field" is a betting option that wins if anyone outside the listed names finishes first.
First Five Innings (F5) Sport-Specific
An MLB betting market that grades on the score after five innings. Removes bullpen variance and is popular with starting-pitcher-focused bettors. Read more →

A spread, total, or moneyline that grades only on the first half of an NFL, NBA, or college football game.

Half-Point (Hook) Odds & Math aka Hook
A spread or total that ends in .5 (e.g., -3.5, 47.5). The half-point eliminates the possibility of a push.
Handle Sportsbook Ops
The total dollar volume wagered at a sportsbook over a defined period. Florida's monthly handle is reported by the Seminole Gaming Commission.

Hedge Bankroll & Strategy

Hold Odds & Math
The sportsbook's built-in profit margin on a market. A standard -110/-110 spread has a hold of ~4.5%; parlays can have holds of 20%+.
Hook Odds & Math
Slang for a half-point on a spread. "The hook killed me" = losing on a 3-point game with a -3.5 bet.

I

Implied Probability Odds & Math
The win probability suggested by odds. -150 = 60% implied; +150 = 40%. Subtracting the book's hold gives a "fair" probability.

Juice Odds & Math aka Vig, Vigorish
The cut the sportsbook takes; the cost built into the odds. Standard NFL/NBA juice is -110 on each side of the spread.

K

Kelly Criterion Bankroll & Strategy
A mathematical formula for optimal bet sizing given your estimated edge and the offered odds. Most bettors use "Half Kelly" or "Quarter Kelly" to reduce variance.
KYC Sportsbook Ops
Know Your Customer; the identity verification process Hard Rock Bet runs during signup (name, DOB, address, last four of SSN). Required by federal AML rules.

L

Lay the Points Bet Types
Betting the favorite ATS; you "lay" the points the spread takes away. Opposite of "taking the points" with the underdog. Read more →
Limit Sportsbook Ops

Line Odds & Math
The posted odds, spread, or total on a given market. "The line moved" means the number changed.
Line Movement Market Action
A change in the posted line driven by betting action, injury news, or weather. Tracking line movement is a core handicapping skill.
Live Betting Bet Types

Long Shot Market Action
A bet with very long odds (+500 or longer) and correspondingly low implied probability. Common in futures and outright winner markets.

Middle Bankroll & Strategy
Betting both sides of a market at different lines so that a specific final score wins both bets. Rare opportunity in single-operator markets.
Moneyline Bet Types

N

Nickel Bankroll & Strategy
Sports-betting slang for $500. A "nickel bet" is a $500 wager.
No Action Sportsbook Ops
A bet that is voided; stake refunded, neither side wins. Common when a player prop's subject is inactive, or when an MLB starter is scratched.
Novig Florida & Regulation
A peer-to-peer prediction market available in Florida. Not technically a sportsbook; users trade contracts against each other rather than wagering against a book.

O

Odds Odds & Math
The numerical price on a bet. American odds use plus/minus (+150, -110); decimal odds multiply your stake (2.50). Hard Rock Bet defaults to American.
Off the Board (OTB) Market Action
A market that has been pulled; usually due to a major injury or other breaking news. Bets cannot be placed until it reopens.
Opening Line Odds & Math
The first line a sportsbook posts on a market; often shaped to attract sharp action that will help calibrate the line.
Over/Under Bet Types

Parlay Bet Types
A multi-leg bet combining 2+ wagers. All legs must win for the parlay to pay; one loss kills the entire ticket. Read more →
PASPA Florida & Regulation
The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992; the federal law that prevented states from legalizing sports betting. Overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in May 2018.
Pick'em Bet Types
A spread of zero; neither team is favored. Functionally a moneyline-style bet at -110 juice.
Player Prop Bet Types

Quarter Line Bet Types
A spread, total, or moneyline that grades only on a single quarter (NFL/NBA) or period (NHL).

Reduced Juice Sportsbook Ops
A promotion where the book lowers its standard -110 vig (e.g., to -105). Rare in Florida's single-operator market.
Reverse Line Move Market Action
A line that moves opposite to where the public is betting; a strong signal that sharp money is on the unpopular side.
Round Robin Bet Types
A bet that builds multiple smaller parlays from a larger pool of selections; e.g., a "3-team round robin by 2s" creates three 2-team parlays from three picks.
Run Line Sport-Specific

Teaser Bet Types

Three-Way Market (1X2) Bet Types
