Point Spread Bets Explained
A bet on the margin of victory rather than the winner. The sportsbook gives the underdog a head start (points added) and the favorite a deficit (points subtracted) to even out the betting action.
How It Works
- Favorite is listed with a minus number (e.g., Bucs -6.5)
- Underdog is listed with a plus number (e.g., Panthers +6.5)
- Bucs -6.5 wins only if the Bucs win by 7+ points
- Panthers +6.5 wins if the Panthers win outright OR lose by 6 or fewer
- Standard juice (vig) is -110 on both sides; bet $110 to win $100
- Half-points (.5) prevent pushes; whole-number spreads can push (refund)
Florida Example
Tampa Bay Buccaneers -6.5 vs. Carolina Panthers
You bet $110 on Bucs -6.5 at -110. If the Bucs win 27-17 (margin of 10), you cover the spread and collect $100 profit. If the Bucs win 24-21 (margin of 3), you lose because they didn't win by 7.
Pros
- Levels the playing field between mismatched teams
- Standard -110 juice is bettor-friendly
- High variance creates entertainment value
Cons
- Pushes are possible on whole numbers (a 7-point win on a -7 line)
- Sharp money can move lines quickly
Best For
- NFL and NBA
- Bettors who want a fair payout on either side
- Same-game parlay legs
