Total (Over/Under) Bets Explained
A bet on the combined score of both teams; not on who wins. The sportsbook posts a number and you bet whether the actual total will be higher (over) or lower (under).
How It Works
- Sportsbook posts a total; e.g., Heat vs. Magic O/U 218.5
- Over 218.5 wins if the combined final score is 219 or more
- Under 218.5 wins if the combined final score is 218 or less
- Standard juice -110 on each side
- Half-points prevent pushes; whole-number totals can push
Florida Example
Miami Heat vs. Orlando Magic, Total 218.5; Over -110
You bet $55 on the over. The Heat win 112-108. Combined total = 220. The over hits and you collect $50 profit. Doesn't matter who won; only the combined score.
Pros
- Totally independent of which team wins
- Good for fans who just want to root for points
- Can hedge with live unders if you bet pregame over and the score balloons early
Cons
- Weather and injuries can swing totals heavily (especially NFL)
- Late-game garbage time and intentional fouls affect NBA totals
Best For
- NBA and NHL (high pace)
- NFL weather games (often unders)
- MLB run totals
